There's been rumors of war and wars that have been
The meaning of life has been lost in the wind
And some people thinkin' that the end is close by
'Stead of learning to live, they are learning to die
Let me die in my footsteps, before I go down under the ground
I don't know if I'm smart, but I think I can see
When someone is pulling the wool over me
And if this war comes and death's all around
Let me die on this land 'fore I die underground
Let me die in my footsteps, before I go down under the ground
There's always been people that have to cause fear
They've been talkin' about a war now for many long years
I've read all their statements and I've not said a word
But now, Lord God, let my poor voice be heard
Let me die in my footsteps, before I go down under the ground
Let me drink from the waters where the mountain streams flood
Let the smell of wild flowers flow free through my blood
Let me sleep in your meadows with the green grassy leaves
Let me walk down the highway with my brother in peace
Let me die in my footsteps, before I go down under the ground
Go out in your country where the land meets the sun
See the craters and the canyons and where the waterfalls run
Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Idaho
Let every state in this union see deep down in its soul
And you'll die in your footsteps, before you go down under the ground

Bob Dylan - Let me die in my footsteps
From Historical Archives Vol. 2. Cover says this was probably recorded in either Montreal or Greenwich Village - July 1962. 'Theres some people thinking that the end is close by, instead of learning to live they are learning to die.' [Had some trouble getting good light on the album cover]
387. Let Me Die In My Footsteps (Bob Dylan)
This song was an outtake from Dylan's second album, "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" (1963). Dylan thought he had outgrown this protest song, which is about the threat of nuclear war. Wikipedia quotes Dylan as saying, "I was going through some town...and they were making this bomb shelter right outside of town, one of these sort of Coliseum-type things and there were construction workers and everything ... I was there for about an hour, just looking at them build, and I just wrote the song in my ...

Happy Traum / Bob Dylan - Let Me Die In My Footsteps
"Let Me Die In My Footsteps" is a song written by Bob Dylan. It was originally recorded for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, but was dropped and later released on The Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961-1991. The song is based on an old ballad written by Roy Acuff and Dylan states (Chronicles, Volume 1) that it was inspired on the obsession (during the 1950s) of constructing shelters against radioactive dust, a common thought in Minnesota in the times of the Cold War. Happy Traum ...
