Elvis Presley It's Now Or Never
Elvis Presley It's Now Or Never
It's Now Or Never was based on the Italian song "O Sole Mio" written in 1901 by G. Capurro and Eduardo di Capua. "O Sole Mio" means My Sunshine. In 1949, Tony Martin had a #2 hit with it using English lyrics and the title "There's No Tomorrow".
While still in the Army, Elvis decided he wanted to record There's No Tomorrow, but he wanted new lyrics and a new arrangement. He told Freddie Bienstock of Hill and Range Music of his interest. Bienstock hired Aaron Schroeder and Wally Gold to rewrite the song for Elvis, and the new version became "It's Now Or Never". Elvis recorded it on April 3, 1960 at RCA's Nashville studios. The single release entered Billboard's Hot 100 chart at #44, and within 5 weeks, it was #1. It spent #7 on the rhythm & blues chart. In England, it entered the chart at #1 and remained in that position for 8 weeks, the longest period of any Presley single in England. Total global sales exceed 22,000,000 copies, the most for any Presley record. Billboard magazine named it the Vocal Single of 1960. It was the A-side to A Mess of Blues.
Elvis also sang this song in concert in the 1970s, and he is known to have sung O Sole Mio in concert as well, namely at Las Vegas Hilton on December 13, 1975.
This song is available on Elvis' Golden Records, Vol. 3, Elvis: Worldwide 50 Gold Award Hits, The Number One Hits, The Top Ten Hits, From Nashville to Memphis-The Essential 60s Masters, Artist of the Century; The Very Best of Love, Heart and Soul, Elvis 30 #1 Hits, and The 50 Greatest Love Songs, which is where this version is from.
